Nutrition & Genetics – Gene or Epigenome

June 18, 2013 By admin Leave a Comment

Does you DNA equal your nutritional destiny?

John Cloud tells us that scientists have actually known about epigenetics since at least the 1970s. But until the late ’90s, epigenetic phenomena were regarded as a sideshow to the main event, DNA. Essentially epigenetics is the study of changes in gene expression that do not involve alterations to the genetic code itself. So the same genes remain, but something is telling them whether or not they should “fire”, so to speak – some outside force is telling them to switch on or off. The changes are governed by the cellular material called the epigenome that sits just on top of the genome (hence the prefix epi which means above).
