On Friday June 5th I was honored to be asked to speak about sports nutrition at Karate Canada’s Junior National Training Camp. As per usual, whenever a group is kind enough to ask me to present to them, I dive into the scientific literature that exists on that topic. So here is a blog especially for all the coaches who signed up for my newsletter at that camp – as well as for anyone else who is interested in the physical science of the sport of karate. The first thing my Medline search at the University of Toronto revealed was that there has been unfortunately little scientific work done pertaining specifically to karate. Karate athletes will no doubt be perturbed to hear their combative sport cousins in judo and taekwondo have garnered much more of the focus of the scientific community.
