Glutamine Supplements

September 17, 2013 by admin Leave a Comment

Are glutamine supplements any good for me?

There are several facts about glutamine that do make it an intriguing potential ergogenic aid. It is the most abundant amino acid in the body. And glutamine supplements are frequently used in certain medical situations – mostly involving people who are critically ill and/or recovering from traumatic injuries or wounds. The scientific literature actually does contain ample support for the use of glutamine in this regard.

But, are they any good for your fitness enhancement?

Hockey and Bones

September 10, 2013 by admin Leave a Comment

There’s no question that hockey players are among the world’s toughest athletes.

If anyone needed any reminding of this, a great example was provided by Gregory Campbell of the Boston Bruins in last year’s Stanley Cup play-offs. While killing a penalty, Campbell dove to block a slap shot from two time NHL scoring champion Evgeni Malkin. The impact of the speeding puck broke his leg instantly. Campbell got back up and finished the shift.

Can one imagine a soccer player reacting in such a manner? Or how would a badminton player respond to breaking a bone in mid-play?

Nutrition for karate

August 27, 2013 by admin Leave a Comment

On Friday June 5th I was honored to be asked to speak about sports nutrition at Karate Canada’s Junior National Training Camp. As per usual, whenever a group is kind enough to ask me to present to them, I dive into the scientific literature that exists on that topic. So here is a blog especially for all the coaches who signed up for my newsletter at that camp – as well as for anyone else who is interested in the physical science of the sport of karate.

When does nutrition during physical activity become important?

June 11, 2013 by admin Leave a Comment

I need things to be kept as simply as possible. And I am not ashamed of it.

In my dealings with the world of nutrition this often becomes a problem for me. As Beth Mansfield, one of Canada’s leading sports dietitians, has been known to quip: “Nutrition is not rocket science… it’s much more complicated”. That’s why I’m relatively proud of myself (if I may say so) for coming up with the following table whose purpose is to answer the question as to whether or not a person needs to be concerned about nutrition during his/her physical activity.
